Key Responsibilities of the State's Attorney in Jackson County
Prosecuting Criminal Offenses: Handle all criminal cases within the county, including felonies, misdemeanors, traffic violations, and juvenile cases. This includes making decisions on charging individuals and pursuing fair sentencing outcomes.
Civil Representation: Act as legal counsel for the county government, advising county officials, representing the county in legal disputes, and defending the county against lawsuits.
Victim and Witness Support: Ensure victims and witnesses receive assistance and protection throughout the legal process, including access to advocacy services and guidance.
Oversight of Special Investigations: Coordinate with law enforcement for criminal investigations, including the appointment of special investigators as necessary to gather evidence and serve subpoenas.
Juvenile Justice and Family Law Matters: Prosecute cases involving juvenile delinquency, child abuse, and neglect.
Election Law Enforcement: Monitor election processes for fraud and prosecute violations of election laws to maintain the integrity of the democratic process.
Public Safety and Problem-Solving Initiatives: Develop diversion programs, support problem-solving courts, and collaborate with other local agencies to address domestic violence, substance abuse, and mental health issues through innovative solutions.
Collaboration with Law Enforcement: Work with the sheriff’s department and local police agencies to prosecute crimes effectively and maintain community safety through joint initiatives.
Financial Accountability: Ensure fines, fees, and restitution collected during prosecutions are properly allocated and managed, including coordination with the Department of Revenue for civil recoveries related to fraud and bad checks.
Internal Management: Manage the staff and operations of the State's Attorney's office, ensuring it is well-equipped to serve the public efficiently. This includes hiring, training, and supervising Assistant State's Attorneys and support staff.
